Want to spend your open water course surrounded by colourful fish (including nemo!), turtles and maybe even manta rays? The Komodo National Park is a sensational place to learn to dive. The PADI Open Water Course is a certification that is recognised world wide, it allows you to dive to 18m with a buddy.
Safety has been and always will be the number one priority at all of our locations. We keep our course groups small with no more than 4 divers per group - although we rarely have more than 2 people in our Open Water Courses. Our instructors are all PADI certified and trained in taking all levels of diver.Â
Our equipment is well maintained by our onsite technician, all of which is included in your package price. Our custom designed dive boats are equipped with full safety equipment ensuring you can travel around the Komodo National Park in style and enjoyment, safe in the knowledge you made a fantastic choice to dive with Scuba Junkie Komodo!
What better place to learn to dive than the stunning and diverse Komodo National Park? Spend your first ever dives with mantas rays surrounding you, meeting the chilled out turtles and being blown away by the beautiful colours of the healthy coral reefs.
The conditions here make it a great place to learn for those who are already comfortable in the water. We have sheltered sites that provide a great opportunity to do your skills and if you feel comfortable to dive in some mild currents then you’ll be finishing the course with some added skills!
The only issue? Once you’ve dived in Komodo nowhere else will quite compare!
The Open Water Course involves dive theory, a 10 minute float and 200m swim, skills sessions in the water and diving!
Once we receive your deposit we will allocate the PADI Open Water e-Learning link to you. This will give you online access to all the theory that you need for the course as well as the relevant forms that you need to complete prior to arrival.Â
The theory consists of 5 chapters, knowledge reviews, quizzes and your final exam. We ask that you have everything completed prior to your arrival. The final exam you can complete once in the resort.Â
Once you are at the resort your PADI Instructor will review some theory with you, get you to float and complete the swimming test and then take you through all of the skills and techniques you need to become a certified diver! The in-water training is conducted over 2 days and all dives are completed in the Komodo National Park.Â
We always recommend an extra day of fun diving so you can really enjoy the underwater world here!!Â
Your days at the resort will be spent out on our dive boats.
Firstly in shallow pool like conditions our Instructors will go over the necessary skills and then as you build confidence moving to your official open water dives.
The first two open water dives are a maximum depth of 12m, the remaining dives are a maximum depth of 18m.
We keep our open water course groups small meaning you’ll be able to move through the course at your own pace. You will also need to complete a 10 minute float and a 200m swim (with no swimming assists).
Yes of course! Most of our manta ray dive sites are suitable for open water students! We have had many people do there open water be treated to amazing manta rays shows during their training dives.
Komodo has a reputation for strong currents and whilst this is true for some dive sites it is not true for all of them! There are some beautiful sheltered areas that have sandy patches perfect for doing skills. There are also sheltered reefs where you can experience a gentle drift that will increase your confidence in the water.Â
We do ask that you are comfortable and confident in the water if you are planning to do the open water course in Komodo.
No, you need to be able to swim 200m and float for 10 minutes without an assistant.
If you are travelling with someone who is already certified then we will keep you both on the same boat but you will dive separately. For your final dive of the certification then your buddy may be able to join but this is at the discretion of your instructor. If you’re really keen to dive with your buddy we recommend adding on an extra day of diving so you can do a full fun diving day together!Â

Important Update for Guests Visiting Komodo National Park
As part of the Indonesian government’s efforts to protect the park’s extraordinary marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable tourism, a daily visitor quota system has recently been introduced. The park now allows a maximum of 1,000 visitors per day based on its ecological carrying capacity.
Because of this new policy, Komodo National Park permits now need to be secured in advance, as permits are issued for specific dates and availability is limited.
For guests travelling with Scuba Junkie Komodo, our team will arrange the permits on your behalf. To ensure your spot is secured, we will collect permit fees prior to arrival so we can purchase permits ahead of time.
We appreciate your understanding as these new regulations are implemented. The goal is to help protect Komodo’s incredible marine ecosystem so divers and ocean lovers can continue enjoying it for many years to come.
